Approximately 6 miles from White Gritt lies the small community of Churchstoke, which is situated on the English-Welsh border.
The community is comprised of Churckstoke, Hyssington and White Gritt along with the smaller settlements of Mellington, Old Churchstoke, Snead and Pentre.
The village of Churchstoke has many facilities including a large supermarket (Harry Tuffins), as well as a primary school, two public houses (The Horse and Jockey and The Court House Hotel), a Chinese takeaway (The Golden Fish) and fresh locally made ice cream (Dairy Dreams). There is also a market which is held on a Sunday.
The local petrol station is part of the supermarket and there is also a community hall which is used for: Playgroup & Toddlers, Aerobics Club, Brownies, Amateur Dramatics, Over 60's Club, Bowling, Football, Snooker, Tennis, Womens Institute, Girl Guides and Young Farmers Club.
Just down the road is Mellington Hall set within 280 acres of mature gardens and tranquil parkland. If you're looking for a wedding venue, a place to stay or a romantic meal for 2, it's the ideal place.
Roundton Hill (rising 370 metres) which makes up one of the four hills of Churchstoke is an official National Nature Reserve due to its volcanic geology and the flourishing Mountain Pansy. The hill is a valuable habitat for birds like The Green, Great Spotted and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Tawney Owls, Redstart, Linnet and the Goldfinch, which all breed there.
Roundton is also an important site for bats, which include: The Lesser Horseshoe, Natterer's, Daubenton's and Long Eared Bats.
The hill was once home to an Iron Age hillfort and the vantage point offers great views across the surrounding countryside.
